Investors in Punj Lloyd Ltd. were a worried lot even before chaos erupted in Libya. With civil war now looming over the North African country, analysts are advising investors to stay away from the engineering company which has orders worth more than $2 billion from Libya - this is about a third of its total order book.
Citing the "current political crisis and unrest" prevailing in the country, late Friday, Punj Lloyd said it has trimmed its order book to 213.98 billion rupees ($4.7 billion) after removing some Libyan contracts that had been awarded to its Singapore-based unit Sembawang Engineers and Constructors Pte.
The projects had been "non-moving for over 12 months," the engineering and construction company said in a regulatory filing.
The company didn't give the value of the contracts removed from the order book but it has 10 projects in Libya-involving construction of infrastructure and laying gas pipelines-worth about 98.35 billion rupees ($2.17 billion).
When it presented its earnings results for the October-December period one month ago, the company said it had a total order backlog of 277.8 billion rupees.
On Feb. 25, the company had said it expects a revenue deferment of about 5 billion rupees after it was forced to stop all work in Libya. The company hopes the projects can come back on track.
