The ray Ban sunglasses sale

The North Face Alkaline GTX XCR ReviewedI didn’t want these shoes. I wanted the The North Face Singletracks, but I accidentally ordered the Wholesale North Face Alkaline GTX instead. I wanted the Singletracks because they are as light as shoes get and their soft uppers flatten easily, which make them ideal features for packing into a backpack, and light on your feet. But my "loss" is your gain. It has allowed me to be an impartial reviewer of the Alkaline.

But alas, I mixed up the names and ordered the wrong shoes. With my package in hand, I beheld the Alkaline. They were pretty light at 708 grams to the Singletracks’ 652. They had more of a structure to them, but could still pack reasonably well. I decided to give them a chance.

At 708 grams, they still feel light on my feet, and they compare to many running shoes out there. Since I run long distances, however, I count every gram on my feet as significant. I also fancy ultralight gear in the backpack, for which the Singletracks would have been better suited. I give the Alkaline 3.5/5 for weight.

I almost didn’t keep them. They weren’t comfortable at all when I first put them on. For one, the shoe had awkward pressure points around the metatarsus (widest part of the foot), but what really concerned me was the ankle of the upper, which seemed to ride too high and rubbed uncomfortably against my malleolus (the bumps on either side of the ankle). It felt like I would develop blisters in no time. What saved these shoes from a prompt return-to-sender was the remarkably fast break-in period. Soon I’d forgotten all about the discomfort, and only when I later thought of it did I realize that these shoes were fully broken-in. Uncomfortable at first, but lightning-fast break-in: 4/5 for break-in.

In another review, I praised the presence of a Gore-Tex? liner in the TNF Jannu II GTX boots, which I use to cross streams and backpack through mud. In running shoes, however, I never cared much for waterproofness, preferring lightness and breathability over everything else. After all, it’s not like I can wade through a stream with low-rising shoes.

The Alkaline, however, come with a full Gore-Tex? membrane, which is basically a guarantee that water will not seep in through the shoe. So yeah, it’s fully waterproof. Now that I have waterproof shoes, I’ve come to appreciate how dew-covered grass, rain and puddles don’t soak my socks, and I’m pretty happy about the Gore-Tex?. And I’ve already mentioned that these shoes are pretty light –the truth is that Gore-Tex? is actually a very thin membrane, and does not contribute much to the weight of the Alkaline. It gets a 5/5 for waterproofness.

It seems to be a recurring issue with TNF footwear. The sizes are smaller than usual. I had to get my hiking boots one full size bigger than I usually wear. With the Alkalines, I got one half size bigger and they were fine; I wear thinner socks to run than to hike, and I like a snug shoe. Other than that, they felt tight, like I mentioned, around the wide “knuckle” part of my foot, but they broke in nicely. They now have the perfect snug fit. 4/5 for dimensions.

When I first saw these online, I dismissed them in part based on their lacing system. I was ultra skeptical of quick-pull lace-lock system these shoes feature. I thought it might add superfluous weight and I was afraid that it might not hold a tight pull (I like my laces tight) or that it might be hard to release. In fact, the system is wonderfully tiny and can’t possibly add much weight. To the contrary, it allows thinner laces to be used, which might actually reduce weight. The lace garage, is nothing more than an elastic band under which to tuck the loose lace, which looks good, does the job and is light. Overall, this system works perfectly well, tightens easily, releases readily, I love it. 5/5 for lacing.

Trademark infringement suits, for our money, are one of the more entertaining corners of the litigation universe.

A common scenario in these cases is that a small business adopts a quirky knock-off of a bigger, more famous company’s brand, prompting cease-and-desist letters from the big-company’s lawyers and, on occasion, follow-up litigation.

Ray Ban sunglasses|Abercrombie Clothing Wholesale North Face
Last fall, McDonald’s lost an eight-year battle to prevent a Kuala Lumpur restaurant from calling itself McCurry. The company behind Victoria’s Secret waged a 12-year court battle against the owners of “Victor’s Secret,” a lingerie shop in Elizabethtown, Kentucky that later changed its name to Cathy’s Little Secret.

The WSJ today looks at these disputes and others, including one we’ll call The South Butt v. The North Face, which involves Missouri college student Jimmy Winkelmann (pictured). About 3,500 trademark suits are filed each year in federal district courts. The problem, WSJ reports, is that many small businesses may not appreciate how far corporations will go to protect their brand.

Witness the aforesaid South Butt matter.

Winkelmann, according to WSJ, started a clothing company several years ago to mock fellow students who wore the outdoorsy Wholesale North Face brand, despite having no inclination to venture into the wilderness. He dubbed his company “The South Butt” and flipped Cheap North Face’s half-dome logo to look like buttocks.

Cheap North Face sent a cease-and-desist letter and, when Winkelmann declined to cease, the company filed suit. Wholesale North Face
Winkelmann’s lawyer and a spokeswoman for North Face Jackets said the matter was settled amicably, but declined to comment further.

Many small businesses, according to WSJ, find it’s not worth picking a battle with deep-pocketed companies, as legal costs alone can run $10,000 to $50,000, or several hundred thousand dollars if a matter goes to court. Most owners who find themselves on the receiving end of a cease-and-desist letter often settle the matter quickly to avoid the cost of a prolonged lawsuit.

Trademark suits, in other words, may be humorous at times, but they are no laughing matter.

Wholesale North Face

I've just paid a flying visit to the lovely people at The North Face in a very wet Staveley, mostly to do a quick update on what's new from the brand this winter, but also to pick out anything I missed from spring 2012 at the recent Friedrichshafen OutDoor show - more about that stuff next week.

Wholesale North Face|Cheap North Face

Wholesale North Face
Anyway, the one thing I didn't really look at in Germany was this range of waterproof packs and duffles. Closures are a combination of dry-bag style roll-top and mechanically waterproof TIZIPs - those big, chunky zips you can see on the duffles, right.

In addition, all the seams are both taped and RF welded. 'RF' stands for 'Radio Frequency' and is a strong and rapid way of fusing plastic materials using high frequency electro-magnetic fields. Anyway, it means the result should be both tough and waterproof.

The duffles are pretty much like they sound, complete with shoulder straps so you can hoik them around when travelling. Then, for more general use, there's a daypack - roll-top closure - and a neat bum-bag. I particularly like the way the mesh external pocket on the bumbag has a water-resistant zip. Looks good though...

No more details I'm afraid, but they'll be out in the spring of 2012.

news infos for Engineering Windows 7

Over the past week we have seen a little bit of blogosphere activity regarding windows 7 and batteries, specifically the new Windows 7 message “Considering replacing your battery”. Since this is related to the engineering of Windows 7 we’re going to use this blog to provide an update to people. As we have talked about many times, we have a relentless focus on the quality of Windows 7 and we take seriously any reports we receive that indicate a potential problem that could result in a significant failure of the OS. In a previous post we talked about the steps we take when we receive a bug report, in particular when we start to see several reports that appear to be the same. For the past week or so we have been diligently working through these steps and more to see if there is anything in Windows 7 we need to address regarding this issue. At this time we have no reason to believe there is any issue related to Windows 7 in this context.

windows 7 sp1

Several press articles this past week have drawn attention to blog and forum postings by users claiming Windows 7 is warning them to “consider replacing your battery” in systems which appeared to be operating satisfactorily before upgrading to Windows 7. These articles described posts in the support forums indicating that windows 7 sp1 is not just warning users of failing batteries – as we designed Windows 7 to do this – but also implying Windows 7 is falsely reporting this situation or even worse, causing these batteries to fail. To the very best of the collective ecosystem knowledge, Windows 7 is correctly warning batteries that are in fact failing and Windows 7 is neither incorrectly reporting on battery status nor in any way whatsoever causing batteries to reach this state. In every case we have been able to identify the battery being reported on was in fact in need of recommended replacement.

Using all the tools at our disposal including contacting customers reporting this issue on forums, customer service communications, partnerships with our PC makers, and of course the telemetry in windows 7 themes, we have been monitoring reports and discussions regarding this new feature, trying to separate reports of the designed behavior from those that might indicate an issue with Windows 7. In the latter cases we are trying to understand the scope of applicability and obtain hardware on which to reproduce a faulty behavior. To date all such steps indicate that we do have customers seeing reports of battery health issues and in all cases we have investigated Windows 7 has simply accurately detected a failing battery. Before I go into our status on this particular issue, we should review the details behind this new feature.

One of the most obvious components of PC battery life (the runtime you get on battery power) is the battery itself. PC batteries inherently degrade in their ability to hold a charge and provide power (as is the case for all rechargeable batteries). The cause of this is complex and includes irreversible changes in battery chemistry, and increased internal resistance among other things and those in turn are dependent on the design and manufacturing of the battery. This degradation translates into less battery life for the user over the life of the battery in the PC. Ultimately, batteries must be replaced to restore an acceptable battery life. A quick check of mainstream laptops will show that batteries usually have a warranty of 12 months, which is about the length of time when statistically we expect to see noticeable degradation (meaning that you start to notice the need to charge more frequently).

Those of us that have owned the same laptop (or mobile phone, or music player, or anything else with rechargeamicrosoft office 2007|office 2011

ble batteries) for a couple of years and taken it through regular charge cycles have no doubt “felt” the decline in battery life though we might have attributed to any number of factors since we did not have any information available to us otherwise.

Windows 7 makes use of a feature of modern laptop batteries which have circuitry and firmware that can report to Windows the overall health of the battery. This is reported in absolute terms as Watt-hours (W-hr) power capacity. Windows 7 then does a simple calculation to determine a percentage of degradation from the original design capacity. In Windows 7 we set a threshold of 60% degradation (that is the battery is performing at 40% of its designed capacity) and in reading this windows xp reports the status to you. At this point, for example, a battery that originally delivered 5 hours of charge now delivers, on average, approximately 2 hours of charge. The Windows 7 the notification is a battery meter icon and notification with a message “Consider replacing your battery”. This notification is new to Windows 7 and not available in Windows Vista or Windows XP
